Bittersweet Goodbyes

Chapter 4

Dad steps up on the witness stand as Lowell is supposed to question him.
‘So Mr. Gray. You say you don’t drink?
‘No I don’t. Haven’t touched a bottle since my wife left me before I married Rena’
‘So you do drink?’
‘No-’
‘But you did right?’ Mr. Lowell questions.
‘Yes
‘So someone you loved left you and you were drinking in a bar called Minisky?’
‘Yes’
‘So you remember the name too. Ok. You lost someone you cherished and you don’t expect Mrs. Rena to not drink after her father died?’
‘It was Rena’s father but my case is different. Julie was my life partner. I loved her like no one else can.’ Said Gray.
‘If you loved her so much, why did you marry Mrs. Rena? Was her love able to be replaced that easily? Was she just a substitute for Julie? I thought loving someone meant you’d do anything for them and if you loved her so much, couldn’t you just cherish her from afar? Why did you marry Rena then?!’ Lowell yells at my dad.
Dad is speechless.
‘I presume your silence is the response to my questions? Moving on, the blood and urine tests you carried out. Can I have the reports for them? ’
Lowell’s assistant hands it to him.
‘These were taken yesterday?’
‘Hmm ok. I called one of your best friends Joe. He told me all about you. He said you helped him quit smoking. Well that’s a pretty darn good thing you’ve done there. So you helped your friend out but you couldn’t help your wife quit drinking? Let’s say she does drink. Why couldn’t you help her with that habit of hers? Instead you made videos and pictures of her drinking? Why did you do that? Perhaps you knew something was going to happen. Perhaps you are involved in this tragedy. Let’s say… you killed your own daughter!’
Mr. Edward stands up in a flash. ‘Objection! Objection your honor!’
‘Permission granted’
‘Look your honor the question is out of the gist. It is not re-‘
‘I said, permission granted. Carry on Mr. Lowell.’ Judge Judy gives a threatening look to Edward.
The court suddenly became silent. My dad… speechless. Did he really kill Rain?
‘You don’t understand I needed the picture-’
‘No further questions your honor’
My dad steps off the platform. He gives me the coldest look I have ever seen in his eyes. It’s like I’m not his daughter but someone he loathes.
‘Mr. Edward, we would like Doctor John, witness number two to set up for inquisition?’
‘Mr. Lowell, with no further ado, you may begin.’ Judge Judy declares.
‘So Doctor John isn’t it true that yesterday was your anniversary? You had reservations at Bon Appetite. What were you doing in the hospital on Sunday? On your day off?’
‘My patients matter the most. Saving deaths is my life’s mission.’ The doctor responds.
‘But who were you with then last night. We have that video surveillance of last night from the restaurant. Who was that blonde woman you were with? Blue yes. That pink dress. Looked stunning on her though.  Are you having an affair? Your wife is sitting right there? What are you up to these days?’
‘No no no! I would never have an affair with anyone. We were out the whole night. We went for dinner and then we went for the mov-‘
‘So you were out all night and you weren’t the one who analyzed the results?’
‘No, I work in the laboratory. I am the one who received them. I analyzed them and the tests came out positive. ‘Doctor John responds.
‘Doctor John, why don’t you take out the things in your pocket?’
‘Objection! Discrete to the subject of matter.’
‘Objection ruled out’ Judge Judy states.
Doctor John hesitates at first but gradually takes out the things out of his pocket.
‘We have here of bunch keys, a few dollars and hey!  A badge. Doctor John, read out the words spelled on your badge.’ Lowell commands.
‘Receptionist Mr. John.’ Doc—or rather Mr. John with remorse brimming in his eyes announces.
‘No further questions your honor.’ Lowell states.
‘I hear you. This is it for today. The next court session may begin on 10th of March, one month from now. Mr. Lowell and her client will be presenting their case in defense of the indictment 798. The courtroom is now dismissed.
